Italian doctors defy restrictions on abortion pill

    Doctors in Italy are defying the goverment's move to restrict imports of the abortion pill mifepristone (also known as RU486).

    Earlier this month the country's health minister, Francesco Storace, signalled a tougher stance on access to the pill in an interview with the Times (1 Feb, p 36; www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,13509-2018913,00.html). He said that imports of the pill had “rocketed” in the past two years and that in future doctors would have to “justify every individual request on precise clinical and epidemiological grounds.”
