France to pilot testing for prostate cancer

President Jacques Chirac of France announced the second phase of his national plan against cancer, last week, with an emphasis on prevention and early detection. The first phase of the programme was launched in 2003.
A nationwide pilot programme for identifying prostate cancer will start next year. Selected men aged 50 to 74 will have tests every two years for prostate specific antigen.
“The testing must be evaluated with the view to making it generally available. We will thereby have the most complete system of testing available in the world,” said Mr Chirac.
