Differences in mortality of immigrants in England and Wales are widening

Mortality of immigrants in England and Wales differs from that of the general population. Wild and McKeigue's study in 1989-92 (p 705) showed that differences in mortality of immigrants had widened since similar studies in 1970-2 and 1979-83. High mortality from all causes in Scottish and Irish immigrants and low mortality in Caribbean immigrants were not explained simply by socioeconomic differences. Mortality from lung cancer was high among Scottish and Irish immigrants and from ischaemic heart disease among south Asians, while mortality from heart disease was low among Caribbean immigrants and from breast and lung cancer among Caribbeans and south Asians. The authors suggest these findings have implications for the aetiology and prevention of common diseases.
