Simple, novel diets produce more weight loss than conventional diets

Conventional energy reducing diets are ineffective among outpatients but very effective among inpatients, which must reflect non-compliance with the diet among outpatients. Summerbell et al (p 1487) compared two novel and simple diets with a conventional one among obese outpatients in a randomised trial over 16 weeks. The best result (weight loss 9.4 kg) was obtained by a milk only diet. Weight loss was not improved by a milk diet to which the patient was allowed to add one food each day. Patients on both the milk diets achieved a significantly greater weight loss than those on the conventional diet.
