The efficacy of Helicobacter pylori eradication as a
treatment for non-ulcer dyspepsia remains controversial. On page 659 Moayyedi et al update previous systematic reviews and report a meta-analysis of nine trials evaluating 2541 patients with non-ulcer dyspepsia. H pylori eradication was associated with a small
but significant reduction in dyspepsia symptoms. On the basis of these results 15 patients infected with H pylori would need to be
treated to cure one extra case of non-ulcer dyspepsia. Despite the
modest effect, a Markov model comparing H pylori eradication
with antacid treatment shows that eradication, at a cost of £56 per
month free of dyspepsia, could be cost effective.
