Incidence of Duchenne muscular dystrophy is associated with social deprivation

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is associated with social deprivation at the time of diagnosis, even when the disease arises as a result of a new mutation, according to the results of a population based study carried out by Bushby and colleagues (p 1035). The authors point out that patients experiencing high levels of deprivation may be unable to access the sustained, high quality, specialised support that they require.
