Expert on AIDS says epidemic can now be reversed

    On the eve of the United Nations' summit in New York this week, Peter Piot, executive director of UNAIDS (the joint UN programme on HIV and AIDS), told journalists that the AIDS epidemic could be reversed because of greater awareness of the disease among political leaders and increased funding.

    “Even two years ago the money wasn't there. It's not enough, but it's a big change. If we had had that kind of money and political will years ago, we would have saved millions of lives. Now more people have access to treatment,” he said.
