Dear Editor: There are numerous positive things about the article by Wilken and Welch regarding the management of people who have been raped [BMJ USA, May 2003, p 245]. However, a very clearly offensive aspect, stated apparently without hesitation or awareness of contrary sensitivities, is the suggestion of using reproductive toxicants, such as progesterone-only emergency contraception and intrauterine devices, in the routine management of such patients. No one benefits when reproductive health is subverted by intentionally inducing abortion. If we do not respect the living human being as always worthy of respect, at any stage of life, we have no consistently ethical basis from which to condemn atrocities of any kind.
