Former consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist Belfast 1948-78 (b Glasgow 1913; q Glasgow 1936; FRCSE, FRCOG), d 18 September 1997. He was appointed tutor in obstetrics and gynaecology in Belfast in 1939, and two years later joined the Royal Army Medical Corps. He served in west Africa and then with the British army staff in New York looking after British prisoners of war returning from Japan. As a consultant he served on the council of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, being involved in the various reports on maternal deaths, but finding time to provide hypnosis for his obstetric patients when this seemed valuable. With a wide range of interests he served on numerous committees after retirement. He leaves a wife, Betty; a son (in general practice); and two daughters. [R S J Clarke]
