Causality, menopause, and depression: a critical review of the literature

Three errors occurred in figure 1 of this paper by Louise Nicol-Smith (16 November, pp 1229–32). The perimenopausal area that is crosshatched in Avis et al⁹ 1993 should have been plain while that in Avis et al⁸ 1994 should have been crosshatched. The dotted box in the age column that straddles Hunter²⁵ 1986 and Ballinger et al²⁶ 1985 should have been with Holte¹⁷ 1992. The note on sample size in the legend is wrong owing to an editorial error. It should have read: “Note: Sample size generally was the number available for the relevant data analysis. However, in the cases of Hallstrom and Samuelsson³³ 1985, Koster and Davidsen⁶ 1993, and Matthews et al^{14 15} 1994 and 1995 the number stated is the sample size at study outset.”
