Sickness absence as a global measure of health: evidence from mortality in the Whitehall II prospective cohort study
BMJ 2003; 327 :364
doi:10.1136/bmj.327.7411.364
Whitehall study is often quoted but what has changed?
Women carers especially use certificates as a way of gaining space to
carry out these responsibilites. Many are forced to ask a practitioner
for a certificate when it is not appropriate to do so - it is the employer
who should make the workplace a fit place for people who have real lives
to live.
Interestingly whilst this study has been carried out there are 'blue
collar workers' employed on the same site as these authors, who obtain both
self and practitoner signed certificates to deal with the boredom and lack
of autonomy and didgnity - which leads to stress and depression of some
jobs - and the stress of overwork for others. Many studies have been
carried out, this study is included in many academic courses now - but
nothing much has changed.
